5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the $$$ September 17, 2012
By Thinkblue
Style Name:Windows 7|Amazon Verified Purchase

Build:
First of all, the build quality on this machine is EXCELLENT. Having never owned any asus product, I'm seriously impressed at the build quality on this thing. Even though I only paid $899, this feels like a $1500+ machine. The aluminum finish is fantastic and feels really good. I will say it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but that's nothing a quick wipe with a cloth won't fix. Also, since Amazon doesn't disclose this, the ASUS logo on the front lid is BACKLIT. Some reviewers have knocked on the weight a bit, but for everything you're getting, it's a non issue. Unless you weigh about 30lbs, I don't see how you could knock on the weight.

Keyboard:
The keyboard is great. I very much enjoy the feel of the keys and the response is excellent. Even for someone with big hands like me, I have no trouble typing at full speed. Also, this keyboard is BACKLIT for those of you not sure, and it looks great in the dark. You can also adjust the level of brightness as you see fit.

Touchpad:
Wasn't too happy with this at first but I've grown to like it. I'm a big fan of the pinch to zoom and all the other features it comes with. Yes, sometimes you might not get the exact response you want or you'll accidentally zoom in on something, but the touchpad is great. No regrets and no serious complaints.

Performance:
Initial boot up takes a bit, but even with all of the bloatware ASUS puts on this thing, it's pretty fast. The i7 along with the 6GB of RAM really makes navigating through all programs a breeze and I've no freeze ups or noticeable lag. I plan on installing an SSD sometime in the near future and doing a clean install but for the average user, there shouldn't be any performance issues.

Graphics:
As some reviewers have previously mentioned, you are using dual cards for graphics. The laptop uses the Intel 4000 for non extensive actions and the NVIDIA for heavy graphic tasks such as gaming. I don't really plan on gaming at all so this is perfect for me. But from what I've read, gaming shouldn't be an issue.

Display & Sound:
The display is AMAZING. Videos, websites, programs......everything looks excellent. Hands down the best display I've used on a Windows machine. I would highly recommend pushing for 1080p if possible. The sound quality for a laptop is amazing. It's loud and clear. I've just started doing insanity workouts and using this and the sound and look of everything is amazing. No complaints at all. I haven't used the included speaker, but I'll get around to it. Webcam is also nice and clear and video chatting is no issue. Other party can hear me loud and clear with no echo.

Overall, I am completely satisfied with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars upgradeability of the X202E-DH31T November 13, 2012

I'm an IT professional, and have dealt with a few ASUS laptops, which I now prefer to Dell.

If you take remove the 9 phillips screws on the bottom, you have access to some of the internal components.
You will need to tug a little, as the case is still held in place by little plastic clippies all around.
You might break a nail, so be careful.

MEMORY:
The memory is soldered into the board, so 4GB is all you will ever have. Period.

DISK DRIVE:
The HDD is a Hitachi HTS5450A7E380 (7mm 2.5") and can be replaced with another "Low Profile" 7mm SSD or HDD. You simply remove 3 screws that hold the cage in (the 4th screw is already removed from removing the back panel), remove the cage, remove 4 screws holding drive in cage, replace with a SATA II/III drive. (It is a SATA 3 6.0 GB/s connection).
I recommend the Samsung 840 series, as they are 7mm 2.5" and very low on power usage. When you remove the old HDD, it has a plastic backing glued on it with two rubber foam strips.
Don't worry with removing it from the old HDD. An SSD doesn't need the shock absorption and will be mounted securely with the screws.

WIRELESS:
The Atheros AR5B225 Half Mini PCIe WiFi/Bluetooth 4.0 module is replaceable.
I am replacing mine with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 so I can use WiDi and Dual Band Wifi.
It was as easy as removing the two antenna wires from the Atheros, popping in new card, reattaching two antenna wires to the Intel 6235.

BATTERY:
The 5136 mAh 2 cell battery is replaceable, albeit proprietary. Not sure what this means for the future.

MY GENERAL OPINION OF THE LAPTOP and Windows 8:

I have been using Windows 8 at work for a bit, and as an OS, it's hard and confusing with a dual monitor desktop power user setup (as I have no need for the Metro interface there, and I feel like I'm fighting it). I had to tweak it to get my start menu back (Open source utility called "Classic Start"). However, with a touch screen laptop, it is very easy to use. I've been thoroughly been enjoying it as a tablet replacement. I admit, I did install an SSD in it, and it is SO much more responsive now (and shaved some ounces on weight as well has dropping at least a watt of power draw). I also have access to a Windows 8 volume license key, and mine is running Windows 8 Enterprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Windows 8 Tablet & Keyboard combo December 13, 2012
By Patrick Kelley Amazon Verified Purchase

As an early adopter of the the Android Transformer by Asus, I had been waiting for a Windows version, which would allow me to run my Windows apps--rather than "almost" or "wannabe" applications in the Android market place. Especially I wanted to be able to use Office apps that weren't some cut-rate version I tried my best to live with.

The Asus TF810C delivers in this regard, but it's the keyboard combo that elevates it above a simple tablet implementation. Unlike the Samsung 500T, which I also own, the keyboard won't "suddenly" decide it doesn't want to work and the wi-fi won't act quirky at random. Having said that, I do prefer the vibrancy of the Samsung tablet over the Asus version--it's just the keyboard that kills the Samsung 500T for me (avoid at all costs!).

You get the functionality of dual touch screen input capacitive and the more accurate active digitizer--with the convenience of a keyboard (should you chose to use it). As a long-time user of Fujitsu tablets (and yes, Apple fanboys, Fujitsu had tablets--even one called the iPad--long before Apple entered the game), I had been looking for something that had mobility and extended battery life; on that the Asus delivers (the Fujitsu "can" with their laptops that offer double batteries, but at the expense of weight and the ever annoying fan noise that finally put me off them).

Unlike the Samsung 500t you get a high-quality active-digitizer pen. You pay more, but the quality build is there--at least in the tablet. It's the keyboard that lets me down. I can only assume that the keyboard was not manufactured by Asus itself. The quality is sub-par and the touch-pad is uber sensitive--in that you even touch it and it randomly registers some function on the tablet (often enter for me). I took to disabling the touchpad completely in windows, because the option to disable it via a function key on the keyboard annoyed me with a bright LED indicating it was disabled. And with the dual touch input, I found it utterly useless anyway.

I can't comment on the extra battery of the keyboard, as my initial one failed to function (this, along with comments of other people further lend credence to the fact the keyboard is of sub par quality compared to the tablet itself). I do have another one on order, but I can say the battery life seems to be superior to the Samsung 500T--which seems to come on (or not shut off when you implicitly try to do so) on it's own and thus drain the battery to 0% . . .

So, the bottom line is--in my opinion. If you crave a tablet with dual input (touch & pen) and want a keyboard option, the Asus is your only choice. It would be nice if the keyboard was of the same build quality of the tablet . . . but compared to the Samsung 500T--as a tablet & keyboard combo--it wins hands down.

[2012-12-20] Update: Received second keyboard and have been using it for a few days. Nice to see two batteries showing up and working. Seems that power is drawn equally from both batteries (according to the stats reported by windows), whereas I believe on the Android Transformer power was pulled first form the keyboard battery and then the tablet itself. Too bad there isn't an SD Card (full size) in the keyboard like the Transformer had.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Windows 8 tablet so far December 10, 2012
By C. Cheng Amazon Verified Purchase

Must tip my hat to Asus and they really do a great job on this tablet. Tablet is very solid built and the Atom clover trail processor didn't disappoint me either. I am a graphic designer and the Wacom EMR digitalizer is an awesome plus to me. The optional keyboard dock is perfectly designed too and unlike the Samsung ATIV tablet, the extra battery in the keyboard dock also gives you even more juice to your tablet for the whole day usage.

The only thing I don't like is the keyboard/touchpad in keyboard dock is tend to be dormant from time to time, you need to wake it up (by pressing the fn+f9 button) before you can normally use your keyboard dock again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I waited! July 20, 2012
By EastSide
Color Name:Amethyst Gray | Size Name:32 GB |Amazon Verified Purchase

I've been waiting for a true high resolution tablet for a while mostly because I will use this to browse news sites/Google Maps and I prefer a screen with more resolution/definition.. This tablet actually has more resolution than a full-HD (1900x1080) screen , it is a WUXGA (1920x1200). Well, I'm very glad I waited. The screen is just beautiful with excellent viewing angles and coincidentally has as much screen real-estate as each one of my desktop's three 24-inch DELL monitors (exactly 1920x1200). One of my Dells is on portrait (vertical) mode for viewing entire websites at once (and 1:1 PDF's) and let me tell you, the TF700 is as good if not better due to the increased density (ppi) and flexibility. I'm truly impressed. I know the New iPad has slightly better resolution but I'm definitely a Google person and am heavily invested into the Google ecosystem (my phone, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Voice, GDrive, etc) so iOS is not even an option.
It is obvious to me that the TF700 is what the transformer Prime should have been; everything has been fixed and improved here. I did find some cons, though but first let me list the pros:

PROS
-beautiful true HD screen, very bright and responsive
-excellent WiFi reception, I get 14 Mbps (2.4Ghz band) and 5 bars in places where my other devices (Galaxy Nexus, laptop, iPod Touch) only get 3-4 bars
-best GPS reception I've seen. I was able to lock 11 satellites in less than 10 seconds in my kitchen (with a regular double pane window)! My Nexus only locks 8.
-really fast UI (Ice Cream Sandwich), not as fast as my Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) but way better than other tablets I've used. Most important to me, there is no UI overlay to slow down things, just pure Android experience the way Google envisioned it.
-really nice oleophobic screen coating, minimal if any fingerprints noticeable after heavy use.

CONS
-proprietary 40-pin USB connector, really ASUS? really? Adding one more connector to worry about.. just when I thought micro-USB was king. I suspect the connector is necessary for the dock but it is such a pitb. I have 5 micro USB chargers strategically placed around my house and cars but with this one ASUS threw me a monkey- wrench!
-no 5Ghz WiFi-N band! a real disappointment. 5Ghz may not have the wall-penetrating power of 2.4Ghz but it is way faster than 2.4Ghz. Even my Galaxy Nexus phone has a N-5Ghz band that gets up to 25Mbps WiFi speeds.
-comes with some ASUS bloatware. Some you can disable thanks to ICS but some you cannot.

Let me add something about the speaker. The sound is very clear, sharp and fairly loud for its size. The fact that it is behind near the tapered bezel can make it difficult to hear if you put your hands over it however, this would ALSO happen even if they put the speaker(s) on front. The sound itself is technically good for a tablet this thin and sleek. It seems to me that they had to compromise with the location because there is no space on the front side (full glass surface) and moving it to another side would make no difference since people will use it on both portrait and landscape orientations. People should be realistic regarding their expectations.

So, is this the perfect tablet? there is no such a thing and I can almost assure you there will never be one but as of now, summer of 2012, this is the best Android tablet your hard earned money can buy. Overall this is an excellent tablet and I'm very happy I waited.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tablet for a reasonable price November 5, 2012
By sidroy

Full Disclosure:
-----------------
Let me state upfront that in the last 3 years, my wife and I have purchased 4 iPhones, 4 iPads, 1 Mac Mini, 1 Apple TV and 2 Macbook Airs for ourselves and extended members of the family. I cannot review this product without comparing it to the iPad 2, which I've been using for the last year and a half.

Motivation:
------------
We have an 18 month old son who needs to be entertained with videos and apps while he's being fed and we have an upcoming trip to India during which we'll need to keep him busy during the flight and transits. Here are our requirements -
1) We needed a tablet that is more portable than the 16 GB iPad 2 that we currently have so that it's easy to stuff into my cargo pants or jacket and pull it out quickly when required.
2) We needed more than the 16GB storage to store his favorite videos because we may have intermittent access to WiFi, at least 32 GB.
3) When he's not using it, I would like a tablet that's easy to grip for long hours of reading.

Choice:
--------
Based on these 3 requirements, I restricted my choice to the iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 32GB.

Here are the reasons I decided to go with the Nexus 7.
The 32 GB iPad Mini was almost $195 ((429 - 249) * 1.0825) more than the other 2 when you include CA sales taxes. It is at least half an inch wider than the Nexus 7 which makes it slightly harder to grip if you have small hands like me. The areas where it's better - slightly bigger screen, iOS app store, rear camera were not that important to me since we already have an iPad 2 and I don't shoot photos or videos with tablets.
I chose Nexus 7 over Kindle Fire because I use a lot of Google services and wanted a tablet with a more open ecosystem. I can read Kindle e-books and listen to music using the Amazon Cloud Player on the Nexus 7. We have a Netflix subscription so the loss of Amazon Instant Video was not that important.

Review:
---------
Here are the things that I liked about the Nexus 7 -
1) Jelly Bean (4.1) is really good. I had played with Android phones and tablets before and they used to lack the smoothness of iOS. I think it's pretty close now.
2) The higher resolution HD screen is great for reading and watching videos.
3) If you are heavily into the Google ecosystem, it's a breeze to set it up.
4) Android in general is more customizable with widgets etc.
5) I was able to download most of the iOS apps that I use frequently with some exceptions. More on that later.
6) I liked the auto-update feature on Android. It's an option that you can tick while downloading an app. It automatically downloads updates to that app.
7) I liked the notification system and realized why iOS decided to replicate it.
8) I also liked the shortcut for looking at running apps and a simple flick deletes them.
9) It is easier for my son to hold compared to the iPad 2. He also has a habit of pressing the home button and exiting the app on the iPad 2 and then complaining about it (he's only 18 months old) but fortunately he can't do that on the Nexus 7.

Here are the things that I thought were missing -
1) There are fewer tablet optimized apps on Android. The quality of apps on iOS for iPad is definitely better. Flipboard was good on Nexus 7 but Zite lacked the polish of the iPad app. NYTimes was good. The usual games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope were more unstable and crashed a few times. I installed Talkatone to make calls through Google Voice and it worked fine. The usual ones - Netflix, Skype, etc. worked fine. I noticed some lag while using Zinio to read the National Geographic.
2) I'm still not used to the Chrome browser on a tablet. It seemed to me that accessing bookmarks on the iOS browser is easier. I found all my bookmarks already synced on my Chrome browser but accessing them requires multiple steps.
3) It is slightly heavier than the iPad Mini but not by a lot. The iPad Mini is still ahead in terms of external design and looks but the cost mattered more to me this time. I may have paid $100 more for the iPad Mini because of the iOS app ecosystem advantage but $195 was a very high premium for an optional device.

Conclusion:
-------------
The Nexus 7 is an excellent device irrespective of the price but the price makes it easier to appreciate it even more. If your requirements and expectations are similar to mine, I would strongly recommend it. I bought this product from Office Depot but I felt that the review might help others make a decision.
